About
This app calculates fire foam requirements based on tank diameter, material, and capacity. The foam calculations are made using industry-standard formulas and are detailed below. Additionally, it retrieves real-time wind speed and direction to assist with emergency response decisions.
Clickable Location Feature
The Location section in the results displays the tank’s location. Click the location or icon to view a detailed route image that provides directions to the selected tank.
How Calculations Are Made
- Square Footage: The base area of the tank is calculated as the square of the diameter (diameter × diameter) multiplied by 0.8 to ensure adequate foam coverage, accounting for safety margins, foam expansion, and surface irregularities.
- Critical Application Rate: calculated based on tank diameter.
Tank Diameter Application Rate (GPM/sq ft) < 150' 0.20 < 150' - 200' 0.23 201' to 250' 0.25 251' - 300' 0.28 > 300' 0.31 - Foam Concentrate (1% and 3%):
- For 1% foam: Multiply the critical application rate by 0.01 (1%).
- For 3% foam: Multiply the critical application rate by 0.03 (3%).
- Total Foam Required: Multiply the foam concentrate (1% or 3%) by 65 minutes for total usage over time.
Weather Data
Our app integrates real-time weather data powered by the OpenWeather API to enhance situational awareness. Key features include:
- Temperature: Displays the current temperature to help evaluate environmental factors.
- Wind Speed: Shows the current wind speed in mph, providing insight into weather conditions.
- Wind Direction: Converts wind degrees into compass directions (e.g., N, NE, SW) for quick and easy interpretation.
This information equips responders with critical weather insights, enabling safer and more effective planning, such as foam application and other emergency measures.
